I was looking for some new books to read. I found myself searching for books on Hong Kong and SF Bay Area, since that is where I grew up and have family back in HK. I was excited to come across this book and because of the ratings I felt like it would not hurt to give this book a shot. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself engulfed in its contents. As others have described it, this book really is a page turner. I had a tough time putting it down and ended up reading the whole book in less than a week. Hoping there will be a follow up and hoping I don't have to wait too long for it. From what I know there hasn't been an announcement yet so I am keeping my fingers crossed.I heard that the author did some extensive research for this book and it shows. There was a few minor inconsistencies but if you aren't from SF, HK or Chinese (Cantonese speaking to be specific) you probably wouldn't even have noticed. I also found the chaptering to be a bit odd. Some chapters had strange breaks in them and felt like others should have had breaks much sooner than they did. Although, those two things were not enough to deduct a star from my rating. Maybe the author chaptered it that way to keep you reading. If that was the case, it worked.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting read especially if you are into HK movies as I am. This book has the same tone and vibe of a HK flick but takes it a step further by taking you from HK to SF and back. The character development was very believable. There are quite a few to get to know and all of them are very complex and interesting. Can't wait to see more from this author.

This is a great book I highly recommend. Everything from the fighting scenes, to the plotting details kept me on my feet. Very intriguing with an unexpected twist that left me baffled. Glad i read this book.
A gripping read that makes one long for those moments to sit down and continue delving deeper into the lives of the Choi family and the Golden Dragons.
This is a page turner that addresses current news and issues brought to life. I was not ready to stop reading, there is more to be told; hoping the continuation is around the corner. The Dragon Within His Shadow
This epic story is a real page turner. It takes you inside a culture that most people would know little about. The characters are interesting and very realistic. This book keeps you up until too late at night, wondering what is going to happen next. The author does a good job of characterization, revealing the multiple layers of each main character. This is especially true for the character John you can connect with his personal struggle to grow as a human being. Well written and enjoyable.
There is a wide range of waste and wealth out there, but these `w's are not drawn upon their covers. Running a word search of "shadow", I decided to give this one a try. I was quickly pulled into a world of the Hong Kong mafia, where complex relationships, conflicts and personal struggles triggered my feelings of excitement, concern and triumph. Far from the land of the Corleones, but I still give this one five `w's.
Wow!!! This book opens up an entirely new world. Hong Kong has always been this mysterious exotic place that I would have loved to explore. With this book I feel like I've been there and met some of the people. George has this complex life that is so intertwined with his business life. The action sequences were described really well, so much that I felt I was able to visualize the fights. My favorite scene was between Catherine and John, when we learn why she has done what she has done. OMG and the scene with Rose and her son! I was surprised to learn the extent of the Triad empire. If you like true crime books, if you like action and exotic settings, then this book is a must have! This is the Chinese version of the Godfather.
If you like books about organized crime, and, if you are fascinated with the Chinese underworld , you are going to love this book. I was really impressed with how the author captured the values of the Chinese mind, human frailty, and especially different schools of fighting. I am wondering why the author didn't write a follow-up... I hope the Gray Soceity didn't get to her \
